Menopause is a natural part of life, but can often cause a multitude of challenging symptoms, including hot flashes, insomnia, vaginal dryness and mood swings. At First Class OB/GYN, Dr. Anghel provides treatment for women who are experiencing discomfort and other symptoms of menopause.

Menopause

What are common symptoms of menopause?

You officially reach menopause when you’ve gone at least 12 months without a period. In the years before this happens, you’ll likely have irregular periods. You might skip a period every so often. As menopause approaches, symptoms may increase. Among the most common are:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain

What causes menopause symptoms?

As you approach menopause, your reproductive hormones, estrogen, and progesterone fluctuate and then start to decline. Menopausal symptoms can also result from having a hysterectomy or undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. Dr. Anghel can measure your hormone levels if needed to determine the best course of treatment for your symptoms.

What treatments are available for menopause symptoms?

Depending on your specific symptoms and their severity, Dr. Anghel might recommend one or more of the following:

  • Hormone replacement therapy to increase your estrogen levels, which can relieve hot flashes
  • Vaginal estrogen cream for relieving vaginal dryness
  • Medications for lowering your risk of osteoporosis, which increases once you reach menopause
  • MonaLisa Touch® CO2 laser therapy for remedying vaginal dryness and the many symptoms it can cause
  • Exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, which helps reduce bladder problems associated with menopause

What is the MonaLisa Touch?

The MonaLisa Touch is a groundbreaking new FDA-approved fractional CO2 laser treatment that restores vaginal moisture and elasticity. Light energy is delivered deep into the tissue of your vaginal walls via a thin wand inserted into the vaginal canal. This stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, which results in a thickening of the tissue and a renewed ability to secrete moisture. Treatment is performed in the office, is not painful, and takes no more than five minutes. Though most women experience positive results after just one treatment, three treatments are recommended, spaced 40-60 days apart, for maximum benefit.

What else can I do for menopause symptoms?

You can make lifestyle adjustments, such as getting regular exercise and eating a balanced diet. For hot flashes, drinking cold water can help you cool off. You should also avoid things that trigger these hot flashes, such as spicy foods, stress, and hot environments.
